From 1912 to 1916 he was Chief of the Supreme Command who had great merit in WW1 victories at Cer, Drina and Kolubara. He became the first Serbian “vojvoda” (Field Marshal) following the Kumanovo battle. After no support came from Entente allies, he issued the most distressing order to retreat across Albania. From Corfu he was transferred to Nice for medical treatment, where he died a year later.
